Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association.

Barton has been charged with assaulting his team-mate Ousmane Dabo while he was playing for Manchester City in 2007.

"The charge is based on the certificate of conviction" - FA statement

He has two weeks to respond and could face a ban.

Barton pleaded guilty to the assault in court earlier this year and he was given a four-month suspended prison sentence.

An FA statement read: "The FA has subsequently received all relevant documentation following the conclusion of this case and the charge is based on the certificate of conviction."
