Protesters around the world are taking part in an international day of action to highlight the crisis in Darfur.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered opposite Downing street to call for an end to the four year conflict in the western Sudan region.

According to the UN, some 200,000 people have died since the conflict began

A letter addressed to Prime Minister Tony Blair was handed in to Number 10 before the protest.

It read: "Time is running out for the people of Darfur, and we urge you to keep the pressure on the government of Sudan until there is an effective peace-keeping force on the ground protecting civilians.

"Whilst we welcome the efforts that you and your government have taken, there is still an urgent need to do more. We therefore urge you to use your influence to push the international community to call for action."

The letter was received at Downing Street by International Development Minister Gareth Thomas.

The Darfur campaign has already seen support from the likes of Sir Elton John and George Clooney.

10,000 hourglasses filled with fake blood were turned by activists to highlight the violence, while organisers of Global Day for Darfur say several other events are taking place in over 35 capitals.

According to the UN, some 200,000 people have died since the conflict began.
