America's love affair with Dame Helen Mirren continues as the British star clinched an Emmy for her role in TV drama Prime Suspect.

After Oscar and Golden Globe success with The Queen, she picked up a gong on Sunday night at the Los Angeles ceremony for best actress in a TV mini-series, as DCI Jane Tennyson.

The 62-year-old, who looked stunning in an aubergine halterneck gown, said: "You took our piece of work to your hearts, and you made what it became, which was a piece of iconic television."

Having collected her Emmy, Dame Helen was congratulated by fellow winner Jeremy Piven who said: "This is the closest I'll ever get to you. I'm honoured to be in the same building with you."

"Oh, shut up," she replied playfully.

The UK's other big winner was Ricky Gervais who won best comedy actor for Extras. However, he wasn't able to collect his award as he was performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
