The Kevin Pietersen era got off to a flying start with England's best bowling performance this summer.

The newly-installed captain gave fast bowler Steve Harmison the new ball for the first time since last year at the final npower Test against South Africa.

"It has given the batters the responsibility to go out and get runs" - Kevin Pietersen

And the 29-year-old, who has frustrated previous captains with his inconsistent form, claimed two for 49 to inspire a South African collapse to 194 all out.

The visitors' captain Graeme Smith battled to within four runs of a half-century before edging a Harmison delivery to James Anderson at long leg.

It was the key wicket and began a collapse of five wickets for 28 runs in 63 balls, starting with Harmison's next delivery which took out Amla's middle stump and gave England the momentum.

England progressed to 49 for one by the close of the first day with Pietersen proclaiming his first day in charge a success.

Harmison said: "Obviously I was delighted when Kev told me I was playing today - I felt no pressure but I was very nervous.

"I was really excited last night more than anything else - it was like Christmas Eve."
