Shilpa appeals over Gere kiss charges

Bollywood and Celebrity Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty has appealed to India's Supreme Court to drop obscenity charges after she was kissed in public by Richard Gere.

The Hollywood actor caused controversy in India when he openly planted kisses on Shilpa's cheek at an Aids awareness event.

Hindu nationalists were outraged after he twirled her in his arms, arched her over and kissed her several times.

The 31-year-old's new film Life In A Metro sees the actress play a neglected housewife tempted by infidelity.

She said: "I think after a certain point in your career you want to really push the envelope and throw caution to the wind and I want to do something different."

She added: "I think it's a great opportunity, a great platform to see a different facet to Indian cinema."
