Chelsea go top as Arsenal beat City
Frank Lampard has fired Chelsea to the top of the Premier League after Manchester City's 100 per cent start to the season came to an end at Arsenal.
Jose Mourinho's Blues took their tally of points up to ten from their opening four games after Lampard was on target on 31 minutes against Portsmouth with his fourth goal in successive games for both club and country.
And with Sven-Goran Eriksson seeing his City side be beaten by Cesc Fabregas' 80th-minute strike at Ashburton Grove, Chelsea have opened up a one-point lead at the top of the table following their 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
After conceding their first goal of the season, Eriksson's men are just two points clear of Liverpool, who won 2-0 win at Sunderland thanks to a goal apiece from Mohamed Sissoko and Andriy Voronin. Sissoko's first competitive goal of his career was the Merseysiders' 7,000th league goal.
Wigan Athletic, meanwhile, were denied a third successive win as West Ham United held Chris Hutchings' men to a 1-1 draw at Upton Park after Lee Bowyer cancelled out Paul Scharner's 78th-minute strike for the visitors.
Bolton Wanderers are off the bottom after Sammy Lee's men beat Reading 3-0 at the Reebok while Aston Villa also picked up their first win of the season as Martin O'Neill's men came from behind to beat Fulham 2-1 at Villa Park. Everton held Blackburn Rovers to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.
Derby County have fallen to the Premier League's basement after Birmingham City won 2-1 at Pride Park as Cameron Jerome bagged a brace.
