Doctor Who gets second assistant

It appears cult TV hero Doctor Who is to get a second assistant in the next series of the British sci-fi show.

The announcement follows weeks of speculation that his current assistant, played by Freema Agyeman, had been axed from the programme.

The new companion, whose identity is expected to be revealed soon, will appear in the entire fourth series

The BBC has said that she will miss the first half of the series, but will be in the show's spin-off Torchwood, starring John Barrowman.

Agyeman, who plays medical student Martha Jones, was believed to have been hurt by the rumours that she had been dropped from the hit TV series.
