Golden Globe winner Daniel Day-Lewis bagged best actor for his critically-acclaimed role in There Will Be Blood.

Day-Lewis is already hotly tipped for Bafta and Oscar success for his lead role as a Texan oil prospector in the film, which centres around the themes of family, greed and religion.

Newly-married Julie Christie, also favoured for Oscar glory with Away From Her, received the Alexander Walker Special Award for outstanding contribution to film.

But there was at least one surprise on the night after Joy Division biopic Control won the coveted best film award, beating Atonement and There Will Be Blood. It also won best screenplay.

Most promising newcomer went to Irish writer and director John Carney for Once, while Radiohead guitarist Johnny Greenwood walked away with the best film score award for There Will Be Blood.
