Baby killed as car mounts pavement
A two-month-old boy has been killed after a car mounted the pavement and hit his pushchair in northwest London.
The little boy's mother was pushing the buggy along Park Avenue in Dollis Hill when a silver Ford Fiesta came off the road and hit them on Monday evening.
The 62-year-old driver stopped at the scene and is currently being interviewed by police.
One local man told how he followed paramedics' instructions to pinch the baby as an ambulance headed for the scene and that the child was still alive at that point.
Another, who declined to give his name, said: "It was a disaster. The car must have gone out of order - the driver was comforting the woman, I'd give him 100 per cent for how he reacted.
"I was walking down the road behind where the car went up on the pavement. It went on for several yards before hitting the woman, then knocked down a low wall and came to a standstill. He wasn't going fast but it was all over in seconds."
The baby was taken to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead where he was pronounced dead at 7pm, Scotland Yard said. His mother suffered minor injuries and was discharged from hospital.
Civil servant Said Issaad, 36, tried to comfort the woman at the scene of the accident.
He said: "She was down on her knees, she was distressed. She kept saying, 'Oh my God, what is happening to him?'.
"It was sad because nothing could be done."
Today, 24 hours after the incident, he laid flowers at the site of the baby's death.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "If anyone was in the vicinity of Park Avenue at the time of the incident and saw the collision, they are asked to call the Collision Investigation Unit at Alperton on 020 8998 5319."
