Dean Macey has confirmed his retirement from athletics after failing to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The 30-year-old missed out on the Olympic decathlon qualifying standards when he competed at Hexham last weekend, ending his chances of representing Great Britain in Beijing.

Macey is the reigning Commonwealth Games decathlon champion and he won silver and bronze at the world championships in 1999 and 2001 respectively.

But he never won an Olympic medal.

He finished fourth at the Olympics in 2000 and 2004.

Macey had not competed in a decathlon since the 2006 Commonwealth Games and his chances of qualifying for the Olympics faded when he suffered a groin strain in the long jump on Saturday.
