Liverpool and Chelsea held
Premier League sides Liverpool and Chelsea opened with draws in the group stage of the Champions League, but Scottish champions Celtic tasted defeat in the Ukraine.
The Reds, who travelled to Porto will be relieved to leave with a 1-1 draw after having Jermaine Pennant sent off 13 minutes into the second half.
But Chelsea will be disappointed with the same scoreline against Norwegian side Rosenborg at Stamford Bridge.
And if Celtic's task to qualify from the group stage was not tough enough already, a 2-0 defeat away to Shakhtar Donetsk will only make matters worse.
They also face AC Milan and Benfica in Champions League Group D.
Liverpool's Group A clash in the Estadio Dragao started woefully and they went behind on eight minutes to a penalty by Lucio Gonzalez.
The English side struck back on 17 minutes when Steve Finnan lifted a free-kick deep into the box where Hyypia headed back across goal for Kuyt to head home from six yards.
Meanwhile, Rosenborg held on for a creditable draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea were expected to make short work of their unfashionable opponents in their Group B opener but lacked sufficient threat up front.
The Norwegians stunned Jose Mourinho's side by taking a 24th-minute lead through Miika Koppinen and only a second-half leveller from Andriy Shevchenko spared Mourinho from proverbial egg on his face.
Holders Milan took the first step on the long road to the final in Moscow when they opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Benfica.
And Real Madrid's Raul is just one goal behind Inzaghi and Shevchenko after heading his side's first goal in a 2-1 Group C victory for the nine-times champions at home to Werder Bremen.
