A British woman has been charged with causing the death of her newborn baby in a hotel in Crete.

The 20-year-old woman, named by sources as Londoner Leah Andrews, was charged with infanticide by Greek prosecutors.

Unlike murder, the crime that does not carry a life sentence.

The prosecutor's office on the island said the tourist was charged with causing the death of her baby after she gave birth alone in her hotel room.

Ms Andrews was arrested on Monday after the body of a baby son was found in the room in Malia.

Ms Andrews apparently gave birth to the child after a night out with friends on the island.

It is believed she was rushed to the hospital, bleeding heavily, and arrested shortly afterwards.
