Radiohead make the Mercury list
Radiohead are among the 12 acts who have been nominated for this year's Nationwide Mercury Prize.
Albums from Estelle, Last Shadow Puppets, Adele, Elbow, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and Neon Neon are also in the running.
Radiohead's In Rainbows was first released last year as a download, and fans could decide how much they paid for it.
Meanwhile, Adele's debut album 19 has also been put forward for the award. She describes it on her official website as "being between 18 and 19; about love".
Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner also features on the shortlist for his part in the Last Shadow Puppets, a collaboration with Miles Kane of The Rascals. It's the third nomination for him, after his band won the prize in 2006, and their follow-up was nominated in 2007.
The Mercury Prize, which is open to all genres of music, has generated more entries than ever before in 2008.
Chair of judges Simon Frith said: "It's been a strong year for UK music and we again saw a rise in the number of albums entered for the prize.
"One of the intriguing developments is the increasing blurring of different genres, with musicians clearly absorbing influences from a growing array of divergent sources - resulting in some great albums."
The shortlist is chosen by an independent judging panel, which includes musicians, producers, presenters and music journalists.
Previous winners include Klaxons, Arctic Monkeys, Antony and the Johnsons, and Dizzee Rascal.
This year's winner will be announced on September 9.
