Federer did suffer one break of serve in the first set in the fourth game when he persisted in sending his big forehands wildly long, but he also broke the American in the first and fifth games.

But he began to show signs of his true form in the second with a big forehand down the line to win the set.

Another huge return saw the 12-time Grand Slam winner break Querrey's serve in the seventh game of the third set and he completed an untroubled work-out in one hour and 35 minutes when Querrey pushed a forehand long.

Federer said: "He's a young player on the rise and serves very well but maybe he didn't have the experience on clay.

"You cannot win the title today but the first round is always a dangerous match, so I am pleased."
