Instruments, clothes, jewellery and even a pair of Bono's trademark shades, will feature alongside items from some of the biggest names in rock at the city's Clarence Hotel.

The items will also go on show in Los Angeles and London before the auction on April 16 to 20 in New York's Time Square.

The sale is expected to include 200 lots featuring items from the likes of Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

The proceeds will go to the Music Rising campaign co-founded by The Edge to aid musicians of the Gulf Coast after the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The exhibition comes days after U2 frontman Bono accepted an honorary knighthood in a ceremony at British ambassador David Reddaway's official residence in Dublin.
