India's cricketers made steady progress on the second day of the third Test against South Africa and led by 23 runs at stumps.

The home side reached 288 for nine after half centuries from Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

Ganguly hit nine fours and a six to build the day's top score of 87

Openers Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer made just eight and 15 respectively before being dismissed early on.

But the middle order helped carve out a slender lead, with Rahul Dravid racking up 29 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni adding a useful 32.

Ganguly hit nine fours and a six to build the day's top score of 87.

South Africa had reached 265 on Friday on an unpredictable wicket that spun, bounced and kept low.
