Thaksin Shinawatra

Thaksin committed to Man City

Updated 09.31 Wed Aug 01 2007

Thaksin Shinawatra has insisted he has no intention of pulling out of Manchester City any time soon.

This is despite the former Thai prime minister facing new questions about his time in office and some human rights organisations questioning his conduct.

"Dr Thaksin will be at Manchester City for a long time. Five years or even longer. It is not a quick investment and he is not trying to make a quick buck" - Thaksin Shinawatra's adviser Noppadol Pattama

The 58-year-old has already had almost £1 billion of his assets frozen by Thailand's military government, which ousted him from power in a bloodless coup last year, and is facing a string of corruption charges which could result in a lengthy jail term.

But his adviser, Noppadol Pattama has insisted that whatever happens in Thailand, Thaksin's involvement with City will be a long-lasting affair.

He said: "Dr Thaksin will be at Manchester City for a long time. Five years or even longer. It is not a quick investment and he is not trying to make a quick buck.

"I am sure he will be there for a reasonable period of time because he wants to be able to take Manchester City to the top of the Premier League in the very near future."

The Premier League has insisted it has no intention of stepping in to prevent Thaksin from being Manchester City's owner.

Officials believe they have no right to interfere as, under UK law, City's new owner is allowed to buy any company of his choosing.
