Winehouse's wailing disappoints

Amy Winehouse's performance at the MTV European Music Awards has been dubbed the worst of her career.

The singer only mumbled "thanks" as she collected the Artists' Choice award at the ceremony in Munich's Olympiahalle, then failed to make an acceptance speech - resulting in some boos from the crowd.

She then stumbled through her live performance minutes later and seemed to have problems remembering the words to her hit Back to Black

Avril Lavigne stole Justin Timberlake's thunder by taking home Most Addictive Track for Girlfriend and best Solo Artist of 2007. Despite being nominated in four categories, Justin left empty-handed.

Besides Winehouse, the only other British winners were Devon rock band Muse, who were voted Best UK & Ireland Act and Best Headliners.

Meanwhile Pete Doherty led Babyshambles in a haunting performance of their latest song Delivery.

Before the show, Doherty - who was handed a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences - showed off his anti-heroin implant.

He claimed he was now a reformed character: "I've been trying to stay out of trouble. I'm in hibernation."

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the event wearing a pair of lederhosen in tribute to his German hosts.

Presenters included Joss Stone, tennis ace Boris Becker, Chelsea player Didier Drogba, and Formula One star Lewis Hamilton.
