Portsmouth insist Sol Campbell missed the game against Derby with a back injury and denied he argued with the club's chief executive.
Reports have suggested Campbell stormed out after arguing with chief executive Peter Storrie, demanding that he should be allowed to join Newcastle.
"I spoke to Peter Storrie about it and he laughed and said it was rubbish" - Portsmouth spokesman
But Storrie has denied those claims.
A Portsmouth spokesman said: "It's quite simple. Sol had a back problem and he's been having treatment on it all week.
"We hoped he would be fit, but he couldn't make it.
"I spoke to Peter Storrie about it and he laughed and said it was rubbish."
