The bob has beat other popular hairstyles in the survey conducted by Hair magazine, including The Rachel - named after Jennifer Aniston's character in the sitcom Friends - which came in second place.

In third came the Amy Winehouse-style Sixties beehive and in fourth place came the Farrah Fawcett flick.

"The Rachel" may have been beaten into second place but Aniston came top when it came to female celebrities with the most beautiful hair.

Catherine Zeta Jones came second and Cat Deeley third.

Editor of Hair magazine, Louise White, said: "The bob is a timeless classic that has been a chic style statement for more than six decades.

"With celebrities like Victoria Beckham giving it their seal of approval time and time again, it's a look that will always evolve to be at the forefront of fashion."
