The first Olympics for pets is taking place in Hong Kong.

The event officially began on June 14 and the finals culminate this week.

Competition was stiff with the event officially kicking off on June 14 and the finals culminating this week

The organisers have arranged a range of obstacle courses from racing to high jump, long jump and even push ups.

Animal lover Heidi Yau said communication between dogs and humans is the key to good performance in pet races: "We need to stay very close to each other.

"Usually, my dog would follow me wherever I go."

Participants used pet delicacies to lure their dogs to pull carts loaded with pet food in rally events.

After the competition, dogs are rewarded by being given the option to dip into a man-made pool or shower to cool down.

A prize presentation ceremony will be held at the end of August.
