The Wizard of Oz was named the fifth favourite film, while Mary Poppins and The Railway Children took sixth and seventh place respectively.

In joint seventh was The Snowman, the shortest film in the poll at just 26 minutes.

Matilda, another Dahl adaptation, followed in ninth place, while Alice in Wonderland completed the top ten.

Fliss White of LOVEFiLM.com, which carried out the survey, said: "Whether it's escapism, adventure or romance - all the children's book adaptations in this poll have a timeless appeal for kids and big kids."
