Hopes for Johnston release fading
Hopes for the release of kidnapped journalist Alan Johnston are fading after the group holding him denied a deal to free him.
There had been indications from Hamas officials that the reporter's release would be imminent but there is still no sign of the captured Briton.
The group thought to be holding Mr Johnston, The Army of Islam, told an Arabic TV channel that the BBC correspondent would not be freed unless their demands are met.
In May, a message from the group demanded the release of Islamic prisoners, including a cleric being held in Britain.
Earlier, Hamas officials said they had made contact with Mr Johnston's kidnappers and were actively negotiating with the group to secure his freedom.
Mr Johnston was captured in March and was the only Western correspondent to be based in Gaza full-time.
The 45-year-old was seen for the first time since his abduction in a video posted two weeks ago on a website used by Islamic militants. He appeared calm and said he was being well-treated and was in good health.
His disappearance has sparked numerous protests and solidarity marches in London and the Palestinian territories.
