
ITN - Technology
ITN has built a strong reputation for the efficient use of modern technology. The company has won a number of RTS and International Emmys for its innovative work in technology. ITN most recently won the IBC Content Delivery award for its distribution platform NeMeSys. NeMeSys was developed by ITN's in-house developers to ensure both smooth and fast delivery of nearly 200 video clips to its mobile, broadband, IPTV and commercial archive footage clients on a daily basis. In the past ITN, pioneered satellite newsgathering trucks, computerised graphics and the switch to ENG (electronic newsgathering), using videotape instead of film.
Today ITN leads the field in the development of digital technology, both in its TV, radio and online newsrooms. Having piloted the first digital newsroom for ITN's World News in America in 1996, ITN's journalists now use a totally tapeless newsroom where packages are put together and edited on their desktops using the latest Avid server-based technology. ITN has developed its own technical solutions for providing news information to a variety of new platforms including mobiles and websites.
Out in the field, ITN has unparalleled access to a range of award winning camera operators. Up to 90 cameras can be assigned to stories on any weekday, with 13 further video journalists across the UK. A fleet of 13 satellite newsgathering trucks are based at strategic locations around the UK.
Back in the nervecentre of the news operation in Gray's Inn Road, ITN has six television studios with dedicated control rooms for ITV1, Channel 4, Setanta Sports News, ITV London and More4.
In 2004 ITN unveiled the ITV video wall which provides the unique combination of real and virtual technology wiing the Royal Television Society's Innovation Award the folowing year. ITN won a
ITN's award winning graphics department is well known for innovative designs produced to extremely tight deadlines and is especially renowned for 3D animation and the ground-breaking use of virtual reality graphics in real time. The department is equipped with the latest computer graphics technology, similar to that used on special effect blockbuster films.
