ECB to fund county floodlights

One-day cricket at county level could be given a boost by the installation of floodlights funded by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

The ECB has announced a £30 million investment in facilities which includes £9 million for every county to install floodlights.

"Cricket in England and Wales has never seen this level of financial support" - Giles Clarke

It is hoped day-night matches will help to boost attendances for 50-over matches and help the game capitalise on new interest created by the recent introduction of Twenty20 cricket, which attracts huge crowds.

The ECB has also earmarked £6 million for improved drainage systems at all grounds that host international matches, which should reduce the length of rain delays.

ECB chairman Giles Clarke said: "Cricket in England and Wales has never seen this level of financial support, and it is entirely due to the strong relationships with all the game's partners of broadcasters, sponsors and spectators.

"Our resources are being targeted to build the continuing affection of the nation with its summer sport, and to give people of all ages and walks of life the chance to play and watch in the best surroundings."

The increased funding will also be used to develop coaches and community clubs.
