Updated 11.55 Sun Jan 27 2008

Novak Djokovic has won the Australian Open, beating unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6.

With Djokovic appearing in only the second major final of his career and Tsonga in his first, the nerves were evident early on.

Tsonga complained to the umpire about Djokovic's habit of bouncing the ball

Djokovic broke Tsonga's powerful serve in the first game, but immediately dropped his own serve and Tsonga claimed the first set with a break in the tenth game.

Djokovic won the second set with a crucial break in the seventh game to level the match.

Tsonga appeared to tire in the third set. He recovered from 0-40 in the ninth game to save three set points, but Djokovic created three more chances and eventually claimed the break.

In the fourth set, Tsonga complained to the umpire about Djokovic's habit of bouncing the ball over and over before each serve, but the official did not take any action and Djokovic won the title in a tie-break, clinching victory on his first championship point.
