Janet Jackson has pulled out of a performance on US show Saturday Night Live as she is suffering from the flu.

Her publicist Patti Webster confirmed the singer visited a hospital in Los Angeles but did not need to stay.

However, she said Jackson was postponing her appearance on March 15 because "she needs some time to get better".

A spokesman for the show said he did not know what music act will replace the singer.

Jackson, 41, was scheduled to perform in support of her latest album, Discipline.

Her last album, 20 Y.O, was released in 2006.
