The first High School Musical film to be screened in cinemas has opened in the UK.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year, starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu and Jemma McKenzie-Brown, made its debut at the Empire Leicester Square.

Zac Efron said he always hoped the series would make it into cinemas

Around £500,000 worth of tickets have been sold making the movie's debut more popular initially than Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Thousands of screaming fans turned out to get a glimpse of the movie's hunk, Efron, who plays Troy Bolton.

After the first two movies appeared on TV, Efron said he always hoped the series would make it into cinemas.

Efron's on and off-screen girlfriend Hudgens was also at the premiere.
