It is the follow-up to the 1998 movie which saw the pair investigate a government conspiracy and the truth about an alien colony on Earth.

Duchovny says fans of the award-winning TV series will find the plot familiar, but this new film focuses on the relationship between Mulder and Scully.

He said: "It doesn't really tie to the mythology much. It ties into the characters as part of the mythology and my character as a believer and Gillian's character as a sceptic and we butt heads in the way we always have.

"More importantly the relationship of the love story between Mulder and Scully is interwoven with this thriller, so it's kind of a unique movie in that way in that it's a love story and a thriller and I can't think of another one like that."

The X-Files: I Want to Believe opens in UK cinemas on July 30.
