The Church of Sweden has given the all-clear to the phenomenon of the drive-thru wedding.

The ceremony - which lasts seven minutes - has already seen 50 couples, ten vicars and several convoys of vintage cars take to the road.

Priest Jerker Asterlund, the scheme's initiator, said: "Weddings are getting more and more commercialised and that is not something we have any interest in.

"We would like to make things simpler and more down to earth when people take the plunge and get married.

"This is not just for fun, but also a way for the Church of Sweden to show we can take part in celebration and happiness and not just in crisis and catastrophes."

The Church of Sweden is regarded as one of the most liberal in western Europe, and was one of the first national churches to give the thumbs up to gay marriage last year.
