Truck blast kills 45 in Iraq

At least 45 people have been killed by a truck explosion in a mostly Shia town, north of Baghdad.

Around 60 people were injured in the attack in a market area of Abu Sayda, in Diyala province, a police source said.

The lorry bomb had contained chlorine gas, which is increasingly being used by insurgents.

US forces have sent extra forces to the volatile province to fight entrenched Sunni Arab insurgents and al-Qaeda militants.

Meanwhile, clashes between militias loyal to Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and Iraqi forces have left eight people dead and 40 wounded in the southern city of Nasiriya, 235 miles southeast of Baghdad.
