He remains in a critical condition following the attack on Sunday night.

The attack came after he was verbally abused as he walked home from a pub in Droylsden, Greater Manchester, and then surrounded by a gang of eight youths.

Police said a 17-year-old youth has handed himself in and has been arrested.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, and remains in police custody for questioning."

Police said the victim was subject to name-calling as he left the Strawberry Gardens pub with two friends en route to his home in Malvern Avenue, just 200 yards away.

The gang followed his friends to an address in nearby Langfield Crescent where they continued to cause trouble.

All three went out to investigate but the victim became separated and was encircled by the gang.
