"Alexander Hleb could sign a contract on Thursday" - barcelona statement

A Barcelona statement read: "On the assumption that he passes these tests satisfactorily, Alexander Hleb could sign a contract on Thursday."

Meanwhile, Gilberto is expected to become the highest-paid player in Greek football by signing for Panathinaikos.

The Brazil international has agreed personal terms and he will head to Athens for a medical.

Arsenal have already lost internationals Jens Lehmann and Mathieu Flamini on free transfers this summer.

But they have signed France midfielder Samir Nasri from Marseille and Welsh teenager Aaron Ramsey from Cardiff City.

They have also recalled teenage Mexico international Carlos Vela after two seasons on loan in Spain.
