Sainsbury's to ban bags
Sainsbury's is banning plastic carrier bags for a day in a bid to be eco-friendly.
Every year, the supermarket chain hands out around 1.6 billion disposable carrier bags but on April 27 will issue seven million free "bags for life" to customers which usually cost 10p each.
In the last year Sainsbury's has seen a 25 per cent increase in customers using reusable bags.
The chain has already launched new, orange carrier bags made from 43 per cent less raw plastic than standard carriers.
Sainsbury's customer director Gwyn Burr said: "We want to make it as simple as we can for our millions of customers and thousands of colleagues to take action now.
"Customers often want to do their bit, whether that's to recycle more or cut down on carrier bags, but don't often know where to start."
