Newcastle to receive Owen compensation
Newcastle United are set to receive compensation for Michael Owen's latest injury woe while on England duty.
The 27-year-old hitman is facing four weeks on the sidelines after picking up a thigh strain 30 minutes into Steve McClaren's men's 1-0 win in their friendly in Austria on Friday night.
Under the Football Association's comprehensive insurance policies, the Magpies can be reimbursed by up to £100,000 a week during Owen's absence.
However, Soho Square officials have stressed the decision on what payments are eventually made is solely down to their insurers, who will foot the bill.
An FA spokesman said: "The FA takes out policies to cover for injuries sustained on international duty. This figure can be up to £100,000 a week but it is not the FA who pay this money out, it is our insurers, if they deem it is fit to do so."
Newcastle have sent their record £17 million signing to Germany to consult top specialist Hans-Wilhelm Muller Wohlfahrt in a bid to speed up his recovery from his thigh injury.
