Cruz plays love interest Consuela Castillo, while Sir Ben Kingsley stars as the insecure professor David Kapesh.

Directed by Spain's Isabel Coixet, she said she had a good working relationship with the book's author.

She said: "I believe the spirit of the book is in the film, as well as Roth's vision of the world. I also think that among all the topics explored in the movie there is also a comment on American puritanism."

The film also stars Debbie Harry, Dennis Hopper and Patricia Clarkson.
