BAE declined to comment, saying that that the "negotiations regarding the potential procurements of Typhoon jets for the Royal Saudi Airforce are between the governments of the UK and Saudi Arabia".

It added: "It is therefore inappropriate for BAE Systems to make any comment as to their content or timing."

Last year the Serious Fraud Office dropped an investigation into a 1980s BAE Systems deal with Saudi Arabia.

It is thought the deal will see BAE pick up an initial £5 billion contract to supply the fighter jets, a further £5 billion on armament and munitions systems and a £10 billion maintenance contract for the jets.

BAE is said to be preparing to build 24 of the jets in its factory in Warton, Lancashire.
