Helena Bonham-Carter could be joining the cast of the film Terminator Salvation, it has been reported.

Bonham-Carter's role in the fourth instalment of the franchise kicked off by James Cameron in 1984 might be "small but pivotal".

If she takes up the role she could be joining other cast members Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Bryce Dallas Howard

Principal photography on the movie started last month in New Mexico with the idea that most exteriors would be shot before a potential actors strike.

Warner Bros is scheduled to release the action film in May next year. It comes from Charlie's Angels director Joseph "McG" Nichol.

Bonham-Carter has previously starred as Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and is set to reprise that role in the franchise's next two films.

She has also received an Oscar nomination for The Wings of the Dove and starred in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street last year.
