Tiger Woods has clinched the 13th major title of his golf career by winning the US PGA Championship by two strokes.

The world number one held off the final round challenges from Woody Austin and Ernie Els with a one-under-par round of 69 and extended his record of winning every major he has led with holes to play.

"I felt like I have played well most of the year and I just did not get it done in the first two major championships" - Tiger Woods

Woods finished second at both the US Open and the Masters but defended his US PGA title at Southern Hills, Oklahoma to claim his fifth major title in two years.

He said: "I felt like I've played well most of the year and I just didn't get it done in the first two major championships.

"I was right there and then on Sunday, I just didn't get it done.

"This time I did. So any time you win a major championship in the year it's always going to be a great year and this certainly is."

Austin finished second with a final round of 67 and Els came third on five-under-par including 66 for the final 18 holes.

Woods believed he won the title with a birdie at the 15th hole as he bounced back from a three-putt bogey at the 14th.

He added: "I made that putt on 15 and it felt great.

"It felt like I had the momentum again and I was back in control of the tournament."

England's Simon Dyson fired a final round of 64 to finish on level par and in joint-sixth place.

He said: "Everything just seemed to click. It was good, one of the best days I've had for a long time."
