A brave comeback by Reading was not enough to stop Manchester United in an FA Cup five-goal thriller.

Reading keeper Adam Federici's shocking error gave United their first through Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha got a superb second from a narrow-angle and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer grabbed a third.

However Steve Coppell's Reading fought back, first through a Dave Kitson header and then Leroy Lita added a second.

The home team hit the post in the dying seconds, denying Reading a famous comeback.

United now play Middlesbrough in the competition's quarter-final, after the latter beat West Brom on penalties.
