Brit shows sweep Emmy Awards

British TV shows have led the way at the 35th annual International Emmy Awards in New York.

They won seven out of the ten gongs handed out at the ceremony, which recognises shows produced outside of the US.

Jim Broadbent took best actor for his role in Granada production The Street, which was also named best drama series.

Meanwhile, the Best documentary award went to Stephen Fry's The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive and the controversial Death of a President won Best TV movie.

Other British winners included Andrew Lloyd Webber's show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria for Best non-scripted or reality entertainment and Simon Schama, who scooped the arts programming prize.

Thailand, Poland and France took the remaining three awards.

There was also a special prize presented to Al Gore for his role in creating the Current TV network, a news and current affairs station found on satellite, cable and online.
