Captain Corry: Vickery on the bench

Phil Vickery will have to be content with a place on the bench for England's must-win World Cup clash with Tonga in Paris on Friday.

Martin Corry will once again lead the world champions at the Parc des Princes after boss Brian Ashton decided against bringing Vickery back into his starting XV after the Wasps prop served a two-match ban for tripping US centre Paul Emerick during the Pool A opener.

Ashton has made two changes to his starting line-up from that which started last weekend's 44-22 win over Samoa.

Bath lock Steve Borthwick comes in for Simon Shaw to form a second-row partnership with Ben Kay, while Leicester flanker Lewis Moody is handed the number seven shirt instead of Joe Worsley.

World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio remains on the bench as Harlequins number eight Nick Easter keeps his place in the team for the third game in a row.

With the back division boosted by the return of talismanic fly-half Jonny Wilkinson last Saturday, Ashton has resisted the temptation to make any changes meaning that Newcastle centre Mathew Tait keeps his place alongside Olly Barkley despite pressure from Leicester's Dan Hipkiss.

England know that they must beat Tonga, a side they trounced 101-10 during the 1999 World Cup, if they are to avoid an embarrassing early exit.

No reigning rugby world champion has ever as yet failed to progress beyond the pool stage.

The England team to face Tonga:

J Lewsey (Wasps); P Sackey (Wasps), M Tait (Newcastle), O Barkley (Bath), M Cueto (Sale Sharks); J Wilkinson (Newcastle), A Gomarsall (Harlequins); A Sheridan (Sale Sharks), G Chuter (Leicester), M Stevens (Bath), S Borthwick (Bath), B Kay (Leicester), M Corry (Leicester, capt), L Moody (Leicester), N Easter (Harlequins).

Substitutes: L Mears (Bath), P Vickery (Wasps), L Dallaglio (Wasps), J Worsley (Wasps), P Richards (London Irish), A Farrell (Saracens), D Hipkiss (Leicester).
