A 14-year-old boy who was clocked at more than 110mph in a stolen people-carrier has been sentenced to youth detention by magistrates.

The teenager, who cannot be named, took the Volkswagen Touran from a care home in Hull in April and drove it at speed for 30 miles going over the Humber Bridge before he eventually crashed it in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

Officers recorded him weaving in and out of traffic on the Humber Bridge at 80mph.

He was later clocked at 110mph on the M180 motorway where he drove on the hard shoulder to avoid the police.

Eventually, officers decided it was too dangerous to continue with the car chase and the Humberside force's helicopter followed the youngster's progress until he hit two parked cars on the edge of Scunthorpe.

The teenager, who was not hurt, tried to make a run for it but was arrested.

He was given eight months' youth detention at Hull Magistrates' Court.

The boy admitted at a previous hearing to taking the vehicle and having no licence or insurance.
