Glasgow tops politeness poll

Glasgow has been named the politest city in Britain in a poll which saw Liverpool and Birmingham voted rudest.

Around 99 per cent of Glaswegians said they always offer their bus seat to a pregnant woman or elderly person compared with only 88 per cent of Scousers and 90 per cent of Brummies.

The Scots were also found to be the most chivalrous, with 86 per cent of Glaswegian men and 79 per cent of those in Aberdeen admitting holding doors open for women compared with 62 per cent in Birmingham and Liverpool.

People in Sheffield are most likely to be punctual, with 88 per cent claiming they would arrive on time for a dinner engagement or party.

Londoners are among the least punctual, with almost one quarter saying it is acceptable to arrive up to 15 minutes late.

More than 1,500 people took part in the online survey between January 22 and February 1.
