Scientists link rainfall to climate change

Updated 10.08 Wed Jul 25 2007

Scientists have claimed there is a link between the extreme weather and climate change.

A study has tracked a dramatic change in rainfall patterns and the UK is in the centre of it.

"We expect that when it rains it will rain harder because the atmosphere can contain more moisture" - Peter Stott

Scientists insist no single event can be explained by climate change.

But the pattern of increased rainfall has been linked to man-made warming.

In the research, the globe was divided into 11 bands, from north to south.

Met Office scientist Peter Stott said: "We could well be seeing natural weather patterns and natural variability but there is also the effect that in a warmer world, we expect that when it rains it will rain harder because the atmosphere can contain more moisture."

Computer models predict we are in for more extreme weather patterns as global warming takes grip.
