Rooney and Coleen to wed in June

Footballer Wayne Rooney and girlfriend Coleen McLoughlin will tie the knot in June, it has been revealed.

The 22-year-old Manchester United striker told a magazine that England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 gave him the chance to marry his childhood sweetheart sooner rather than later.

The couple have been together for five years

He said: "For a while we couldn't make any plans because I didn't know whether I would be playing in Euro 2008 - but when we failed to qualify, as devastating as that was, we were able to come up with some firm dates.

"Had England got through to the tournament then we would have married later on in the summer but that meant we wouldn't have had a honeymoon. So I guess there is some upside to it!"

Coleen, 21, told the magazine that she has visited wedding venues in France and Italy and will be checking out more places in Ireland and England.

She also said the couple both want a Roman Catholic wedding and want to be married before they start a family.

The couple have been together for five years.
