Alonso started from fourth place on the grid and slipped further back when he was overtaken early on by the BMW pair, Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.

But he recovered while his McLaren team-mate Hamilton fell from second on the grid to finish in fifth spot.

Felipe Massa won the race for Ferrari, with his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in second place.

Heidfeld finished fourth.
