Roger Federer returned to the tennis court for the first time since losing the epic Wimbledon final and suffered an immediate defeat.

The world number one was knocked out of the Rogers Cup in Toronto by Gilles Simon 2-6 7-5 6-4 and he has now lost ten of his 53 competitive matches this year.

"I did not have much practice so it was a tough start" - Rafael Nadal

But Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal enjoyed a 6-4 6-2 win over American qualifier Jesse Levine in the same event.

Nadal said: "It's not easy to play, especially after Wimbledon. I didn't have much practice so it was a tough start.

"Right now I am just continuing to try and improve my hard court season."

Andy Murray is through to the third round after a 6-4 6-4 win over Sweden's Thomas Johansson.
