Wheel clamper Levi Bellfield has been found guilty of the murder of students Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange in south west London.

Bellfield, 39, was also found guilty of attacking schoolgirl Kate Sheedy but the jury was unable to reach verdicts in connection with two other attacks, on Anna-Maria Rennie, 17, in Whitton, south west London, in October 2001, and Irma Dragoshi, 33, in December 2003.

The Crown Prosecution Service is not seeking a retrial on the other charges against Bellfield.

He has now been named as the prime suspect for the murder of 13-year-old schoolgirl Milly Dowler six years ago.

And police have said they want to question him over 20 other unsolved attacks against women.

The jury convicted Bellfield unanimously of the murder of 22-year-old Miss Delagrange. Majority 10-2 verdicts were reached for 19-year-old Miss McDonnell's murder and the attack on 18-year-old Miss Sheedy.

He will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

The court heard how Bellfield trawled bus stops in suburban streets around London for young women.

He preyed on teenagers by offering them drink, drugs and sex but would attack them in a violent rage if they turned him down.

The killer eluded police for many years despite coming to their attention for lesser offences.

But after the shocking death of Miss Delagrange, who was smashed over the head with a hammer in 2004, police were convinced the attacks were the work of one man.

Bellfield sought out blonde women who were young and slim. He could not accept being rejected by them.

Brian Altman QC, prosecuting, told a pre-trial hearing: "He hated women. He hated blonde women."

The attacks were consistent "with someone who has great animosity to women".

He told the jury: "These women were targeted victims of a predatory man who stalked bus stops and bus routes in vehicles looking for young women to attack."

The father of 11 children by five women, Bellfield had a massive ego and a need to control his young partners.

He had been a bouncer who hit upon wheel clamping as an easy way to make money - often lying in wait for motorists in a series of vans and cars with painted-out windows.

It was these vehicles he used to stalk bus stops in the area around Twickenham, west London.

After the verdict, attack survivor Ms Sheedy, now a 21-year-old university student, said: "The fact that Bellfield has been found guilty means more to me than I can possibly say."

Miss Sheedy wept and hugged friends and family after jurors returned their verdicts today and was loudly cheered as she left the Old Bailey.

She said: "I have waited for nearly four years for this day and it is hard to express how much it means to me. At the time I was celebrating moving on to a new chapter in my life.

"All that hope and excitement was taken from me. The road to recovery has been long and hard. There were times when I thought I would never get better.

"I will never be able to forget what happened to me."

The parents of Ms Delagrange lashed out at Bellfield's arrogant behaviour in the dock during the trial.

Jean-Francois and Dominique Delagrange said in a statement: "We would like to have heard from Bellfield a confession of sorts, some evidence of remorse. In this we were disappointed.

"This guilty person has showed an unbelievable level of arrogance."

They said Bellfield spent the trial "making gestures, showing an indifferent attitude by winking at us and others or mouthing obscenities at others in court, including family members."

The couple criticised the way Bellfield deliberately yawned during evidence and described his behaviour as "odious".

The couple said the trial was the final tragic chapter in their daughter's short life.

They said: "It is nearly four years since our lives and our family's lives were so seriously disrupted, descending into a horror - a living nightmare."
