World champion Fernando Alonso has won the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver clinched a comfortable victory at Sepang to move to the top of the world championship standings after two races.

Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson finished in 12th and 16th places respectively

Alonso's team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished second, improving on the third place he picked up in his maiden Grand Prix in Australia.

But the young Brit had to fight off a late challenge from former McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen in his second race for Ferrari.

Raikkonen's team-mate Felipe Massa started the race in pole position, but he was overtaken by Alonso at the first corner and he slipped to sixth at one stage as he ran off the track while trying to pass Hamilton.

Massa recovered to finish fifth, behind Nick Heidfeld.

Giancarlo Fisichella was sixth, Jarno Trulli came seventh and Heikki Kovalainen claimed the last point on offer in eighth place.

Jenson Button and Anthony Davidson finished in 12th and 16th places respectively, more than a lap behind the leaders. David Coulthard retired from the race.
